We dun tree'd a bar !!
What a day, what a hike! This was a hike of 'most's'. Most surprising, most adventuresome, most miles (11.6 round trip - really!), most beauty. The place was the Tonga Ridge/Sawyer Pass/Fisher Lakes trail# 1058. The fall colors were spectacular, especially in Sawyer Pass. We drooled and oggled, taking a wrong trail out of the Pass. After an adventurous bushwack in which we made our own way through the forest terrain, we arrived....at the wrong lake! Thank goodness we had our friend's GPS, a Garmin 60cx, it greatly helped us. More details are in the photo captions. The last bit of the hike continued to bring adventure. It was dusk, suddenly we heard a loud sharp CRACK such as wood snapping just ahead on the trail. It was a huge Black BEAR. We froze, peering ahead in the poor light, for almost a full minute. Then Mark began to clap his hands loudly, yelling out Hey HEY...we heard the bear scooting up a tree just off the trail. He gave a tremendous snorting-exhaling noise. As we quickly passed him, Mark could see his face staring out at us with his lips curled back, looking very displeased. But he stayed put! Thank goodness Mark knew what to do!! My hero!!Read More
