Silver Dollar Lake - August 4, 2014
So far the absolute best hike we've done in 2014. Rated moderate, this six mile round trip (772 feet elevation gain) trek included three alpine lakes, fun critters, cool bugs, and outstanding wildflowers blooming at peak. What a joy the flowers were!
We found the hike in the book Colorado's Best Wildflower Hikes, Volume 1: The Front Range. The only fault we could possibly find in the description of the trail was that its beauty was understated. Or maybe we visited during an especially good year.
One concern for the day was the 60% probability of rain for the area during the afternoon. We did in fact encounter other hikers who were leaving as overhead clouds formed. We took a wait and see position and were treated to a mere light rainfall for our trouble. Only as we were getting back to our car did a heavy rain start in. Bonus for wait and see'rs.
The trail was easier for us both going rather than coming. The downward aspect of the trail going back to our car was hard on us both - feet and knees were weary by the end. The good news was, this passed quickly once back in the car and resting the tired bits.
For those who have access to this trail, we would greatly recommend it - during peak bloom if possible - see what YOU think.
