Paint Mines - Calhan Colorado
Thank you Geocaching - for celebrating International Earthcache Day, which led us to this very interesting site in Colorado. Clay deposited here goes back as far as 55 million years ago. And evidence of human life has been found in the surrounding area that dates back 9,000 years.
The hoodoos, gullies, badlands, and break formations that formed here are only one of four such geologic areas in Colorado. Native Americans and early settlers have harvested materials from the site for thousands of years.
Our visit took place on October 9, 2016. Enjoy a tour of the site in early fall, showing the formations, plant life, birds, and insects that we found during our time here.
