If you are lucky, you will find a treat waiting for you on Haleakalā. No, it is not a hike or a silversword. It is not a Nene or a gaze up into the stars. You will drive down a non-descript looking road not long after entering the park. When you exit your car to the sounds of bird calls all around you, you will have arrived at Hosmer Grove.

Given the tiny distance involved in exploring the grove, the rewards for bird seekers are big in contrast. As visitors proceed farther into the grove, the bird's songs become even more varied and intense. The tantalizing sounds begin to come from everywhere. But where, oh where, ARE THEY?

For those visitors fast of eye and shutter ready, a rare glimpse of a true Hawaiian Honeycreeper species is possible. Mark was our man at Hosmer Grove. He managed to capture photos of two of the many species often found here. We sucked in our breath as a famous Nene goose gave off it's call and made a brief apperance in the brush below us. It was gone again in the snap of a finger.

Hosmer is a avian delight for the ears and eyes. Take the short loop trail until you are dizzy or deaf. One item is certain, you will leave with a smile on your face.
