Coulee Corridor National Scenic Byway
The Coulee Corridor National Scenic Byway was a fortuitous diversion for us as we set out for a week's vacation in our 24' Jamboree RV to the North Cascades National Park. Double checking the weather, always a good idea, showed that the forecast had turned a bit nasty! Our first two days in the park would be accompanied by mixed rain and snow with lows in the high 20s. Eww!
But we were all packed up and itching to head out! With heads bent over our phones we searched alternate routes and things to do. Eastern Washington may not please some outdoorsy folks. It's dry and often arid looking landscape may be off putting to some. But we had fond memories of visiting the Grand Coulee Dam in this area quite a few years ago. Zeroing in and lo and behold! There's an actual scenic byway through the area. With MUCH better conditions than the park. And ending at it's doorstep.
Do we enjoy wildlife refuges? State parks with interesting formations? Quaint towns with friendly people? Flood carvings over the land? A mighty dam that supported economic relief by a beloved united states president? Geological beauty everywhere the eyes land? Could we ask for more from a spontaneous diversion?
Done and done! Bring on roughly 140 miles of interesting and beautiful road trip!
