Colorado Trail at Kenosha Pass - 6.11.13
We have long been curious about this section of the Colorado Trail where it intersects with Kenosha Pass. The Colorado Trail in total extends for an amazing 468 miles! We've noticed the signs for the trailhead many times as we drove Hwy 285 towards Fairplay. Thanks to geocaching we finally hiked here. Our goal included finding the codes for 3 geocaches in the SouthPark Geo Tour, with the farthest cache at 2.5 miles in. The 5 mile total round trip made for a great piece of exercise and terrific experience for getting to know this trail.
Views were wonderful, elevation gain not bad, and the many species of low growing (and a few showy ones too) wildflowers in bloom made for interesting looking along with finding the caches. As is so often the case when hiking in the Rocky Mountains, the smell of the air was sweet and delicious!
A great thing about this hike was the diversity along the trail. One section leads through beautiful stands of aspens. Then the trail becomes more forest, with tantalizing views of the Rockies peeking through the trees. Farther in the trail opens to meadows with views more open, looking down on the Southpark valley.
This hike was a great beginning for our geocaching weekend. Hope you enjoy the photos!
