Railroad Tunnel Trail - Lake Mead - May 2017
We're calling the Railroad Tunnel Trail 'The Hike of the Heat Weenies'. Because we're Heat Weenies. We wilt like spinach drizzled with hot oil as the temperature rises. As it did today. We left early in the day armed with water, grilled chicken, and apples plus oranges. Good protein and high moisture fruit. It wasn't enough. Since we are stuck at Lake Mead for approximately another 10 days, we are making the best of it. Our window glass may need repair (under warranty, thankfully) but why not do some hiking and see the sights while we wait the process out.
Seven miles later the temperatures of the day overtook us despite our early departure. That will happen when the forecast is in the mid to high 90's during the upcoming week. On the bright side the trail was mostly flat, even terrain, or we may have been vastly more uncomfortable. Would we do it again?
Most definitely! Enjoy your virtual hike.

Railroad Tunnel Trail
No bats in the tunnels today, just humans.
The entire lower parking lot was full up when we pulled in, leaving us in doubt about doing such a popular hike. Happily the crowd of people also hiking dispersed over the trail. There was plenty of elbow room for all. Not only walkers came out. We saw runners, bikers, and youth groups on the trail. Good multi-purpose hike.
