Cape Falcon Trail - June 8, 2022
A coastal hike unlike any of the many many other hikes we've ever done. Sadly, not in the best way. In retrospect we were only too glad this was a short hike. At 5.6 miles RT and 1200' total elevation change, it felt at times like the trail was too long. Never have we encountered so much slip, squish, squelch, and MUCK as we found on this hike.
We've had a busy time through spring with projects on the home front. This was only our 2nd hike of the 2022 season. What a way to break in the hiking boots. Thankfully the views of the gorgeous Oregon coast from the final overlook, numerous species of wildflowers, and a couple of friendly lunch companions helped us take the miserable trail conditions in 'stride'.
Most of the hike roams through forest and across small creeks with peek-a-boo views of the beach far below. The plentiful species of wildflowers consisted mainly of innocuous blooms. To most hikers, Cape Falcon would not be remembered as a wildflower hike. Since we are interested in any and all we found the trail to be bountiful for spring and early summer blooms. The views from the overlook did much to offset the unpleasant trek to get there.
We had done this hike with family at nearly the same time of year back in 2007. At that time the outstanding feature was getting around downed trees in a few places. Many years of hikers boots since then, and heavy rain, have churned the trail to a pulp. Would we do the hike again? As apparently the trail is known for squish all year round, probably not. But it was a fine day and great exercise. Not sorry we did it!
