Gnat Creek Trail - February 2, 2022
We FOUND it! A pleasant forest hike, less than an hour from home, conditions in winter moderate, not too easy, not too long.
We first explored Gnat Creek Trail as a family hike with brother Charlie and sister Laurie. Total miles about 3. A delightful break in the usual dreary weather of the Pacific Northwest with a forecast of sunny dry conditions, we were beckoned to come out. It paid off nicely.
With an itch to be out for a stretch of the legs, we returned to Gnat Creek Trail the following week to finish out the section of the hike we didn't see the first time. Not quite as nice a day as the first time, still we were not disappointed. With 5.2 miles and 978' elevation gain it was the perfect quickie day hike. The day was dry and brightened up as we hiked. As we were hiking mid-week, we had the trail entirely to ourselves. By early afternoon we were wrapped up, itch scratched, and back home for some relaxation.
The trail starts out in the Gnat Creek Campground in easy reach of charming Long Beach Washington and Astoria Oregon. A typical forest hike, the trail pleasantly makes way to the Gnat Creek Fish Hatchery. From there it isn't long before the trees are draped in mosses much like the Olympic National Park. Right in our backyard! About midway the trail leaves the creek and stumbles through a newly cleared area. The trail just ahead at some point not too distant had dropped from the embankment right into the creek, as well as being covered by tree fall. The diversion doesn't last long. The trail goes on to meander up and down, closer and then farther away from Gnat Creek. The pleasant lull of watery music fades and returns unexpectedly, making the hike a lovely walk to a changing tempo. For a sweet finish, the end trail area is set up with a couple of comfortable wooden benches making the perfect place to sit, have a bite, and enjoy the atmosphere before hiking back out.
With this very nice hike so near our home, we now have a bolt hole for winter hiking that we can return to over and over when we want a bit more exercise than just a 'walk'. Plus the distance is an easy range for our electric car. What a win win!
