Ice Caves, Trail 723 - October 27, 2007
Mark and I find ourselves once again in the Mt Baker-Snoqualamie National Forest area. On the way to cruise the newly re-opened Mountain Loop road, we stopped to take a little walk. The little walk turned out to be a delightful stroll through forest generously populated with the variety of fungus that abounds at this time of year, lush ferns, creeks, blooming lichens, and challenges! Oh no! The bridge allowing foot traffic over the Stillaguamish River was smashed right through the middle by storm debris. Many of us were undaunted. With the convenient assistance of a huge tree fording the waters, we made our way across to the trail on the other side and completed the trek to the ICE CAVE! Here we must confess that the magnetic lure of the cave's interior overpowered us. We went INSIDE the biggest cave. This was a two mile round trip walk, with no elevation gain, and an easiest rating. On a fun side-note, we chatted on some of the trail at various times with other hikers that turned out to be fellow geo-cacher's! At the hike's end we were delighted with the custom plates on their SUV; Hidnsek!! After our 'little walk' we went on to the Mountain Loop Road, and grabbed a few photos of that area. Next time we will ride the loop on our motorcycles!
