Thunder Creek Trail - October 2, 2021
Two words perfectly describe this hike...Mushroom Nirvana!!
When we decided to make the North Cascades National Park our week long fall vacation, one of our hopes was to see mushrooms. The prediction for fall colors for the 2021 season was summed up in one word - muted. If we had to go short on fall color, bring on the fungus instead please. Thanks to Heather-Maple Pass Loop, we wound up with both.
Thunder Creek Trail was a hike we did long LONG ago and far away in another galaxy in 2007. This time in the park we aimed to hike Thunder Knob. Too bad for us. The old wooden bridge had fallen to the elements and the mobile steel replacement bridge had been removed for the winter season. Since we were camped steps away from the Thunder Creek trailhead, in Colonial Creek Campground, off we went. Our plan was to make a quick stroll of it and go on to other things in the park.
Enter the mushrooms!! 7.1 miles and very little elevation gain later we stepped off the trail and back to our RV. We couldn't stop hiking any sooner than that. As it turned out, the hike was like a brand new experience. We didn't much remember the trail at all. The diversion from Thunder Knob paid off in fungal spades.
To cap the treat, it was delightful to return to our cozy RV for hot drinks and a good meal almost as soon as we were done hiking.
Enjoy the MUSHROOMS!
