Rollins Pass, Twice
Day one: This dual sport ride ended at the final turn to go up to Rollins Pass, just outside of Rollinsville. The road ends at the Moffat Tunnel, about another .7 miles. The scenery on this ride is just delightful. An old schoolhouse nestled at the foot of the mountains is a sweet sight, wildflowers all along the road are still in bloom, and the pretty Colorado River meanders here and there as well. Be prepared for trains! We were stopped THREE times by cargo trains. The road was in excellent shape until the turn up to Rollins Pass, now a curious and enticing destination to see what is up there. Ending at an 11,680 foot elevation.
Day two: Mark is riding his Vstrom, I am on my KLR650. One half mile of the road to the pass is all I care to do!! BIG rocks and endless potholes, steep inclines - nope, not me! I suggest that we leave the Strom and both go on the KLR. We did just that. The ride itself was uncomfortable...very bumpy and nerve-wracking - for me. Mark loved every inch! BUT for both of us...the scenery was WONDERFUL. I would do the ride as a passenger again in a flash! Mark is a skilled dual-sporter. He navigated the road very well. Another rider, about an hour ahead of us, did not fare so well. He crashed his bike and broke his leg this day. The ambulance carrying him passed us going down, with his KTM following in a friend's pickup.
Both days on Rollins Pass - GREAT!
